Pub Run 28/7/2024

“Now that was not a bad Sunday Drive”

That comment was heard from a number of participants and is one I thoroughly agree with. After months of little rain and dry countryside, it was very pleasant to see some green, even though the grass and crops were not that high yet. While awaiting our departure at the Johnstone Park Clubrooms, it was not exactly a heatwave, but pleasant enough standing in the sunshine. We had 21 vehicles with 40 members and 3 visitors, all waiting with bated breath to depart. Then we departed for Strathalbyn via the Old Princes Highway. No surprises there, we have all been that way many times before, although the “Australian Portable Camps” complex at Monarto South just gets bigger and bigger. Arriving at Strath Railway Station, more standing around in the sun, enjoying coffee and treats brought from home or purchased across the road at the bakery.

And on to the next leg of the run. Through Ashbourne, Nangkita and Mount Compass, all very pretty country, passing by creeks and wetlands and some excellent views from the hilltops, culminating with sweeping views of Middleton and the surrounding beaches before dropping down the range into Middleton itself. We had been warned about speed traps in the area and I believe there were two, although personally I only saw one. I hope we all behaved ourselves!

Arriving at the Middleton Tavern, there was a large area set aside for us. We had soon made ourselves at home, ordering our drinks and lunch. The line up for lunch orders was significant, but all was handled in a very professional way, and I was surprised how quickly everyone had returned to their seats and commenced the important job of solving the world’s problems. I think the staff have done all this before!

Meals arrived quickly and they were great (at least I heard no complaints). Quite a few went on to partake in desert. Then President Brian thanked participants and organisers. It was time to go home.

Hope you all enjoyed yourselves.
